Please share a memory of Mary to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.
Daughter, Sister, Aunt and Teacher Mary lived a long and beautiful life. She loved to travel, swim, read and play bridge. After she retired, Mary would spend her winters at her home in Arizona. She loved learning new things and teaching it to others. Mary was born to teach. At a young age she began her journey playing school. Her brothers George and Joe were her first students. George loved it; Joe not so much. At St. Anthony’s Parochial school in Greenpoint, Mary received three scholarships for high school. She chose to attend St. Angela Hall Academy in Brooklyn and went on to receive a scholarship to St. Joseph’s College for Women. She continued her schooling at City College of New York where she received a Master’s Degree in education. Mary started her official teaching career in 1950 with the New York City school district in Harlem. After four years, she took a job with the Franklin Square school district in Long Island. She taught for 34 years at the Washington Street School and ended her 40-year career at the Polk Street School with the Franklin Square School system. Even after her retirement, Aunt Mary continued to teach until the day she passed. She loved it when people were learning new things. Mary was a devout Catholic. She has been a parishioner of St Joseph’s Church for 50 years. When she retired she would attend daily Mass. You could see her on Saturday evenings at the 5 o’clock Mass with her sister Ann and friend Helen. Mary is survived by her sister Ann. Predeceased by her parents George and Cecilia (Graham) Loos and siblings George, Joseph and Joan Mitchell. Mary will be missed by her beloved sister Ann, many nieces and nephews and her caregivers (Maribel, Zie and Rose). . In lieu of flowers please make donations to St. Judes Children’s Hospital (Aunt Mary’s favorite) or to your own favorite charity.
